How Often Do Tortoises Eat?
How often to feed a tortoise by species and age, why portion formulas do not work, how to judge body condition properly, and the signs of overfeeding.
Once a day for most tortoises, with adults often given one day a week without food. Grazing species should have hay available constantly.

Those frequencies come from British Chelonia Group guidance. What follows is the harder question, which is how much, and why we will not give you a number.
Why there is no universal portion formula
You will see two rules repeated everywhere. Both are worth ignoring.
“Feed a portion the size of the tortoise’s shell.” This has no source behind it. It appears on hundreds of pages and traces back to nothing in particular. Shell surface area has no relationship to energy requirement, and the same portion would be wildly different for a hatchling and an adult of the same species.
“Feed a plate-sized amount.” Same problem, plus it depends on your crockery.
Portion depends on species, age, body size, ambient temperature, season, activity level, what else the animal has eaten that week, and the individual. No formula captures that, and any site that gives you grams per kilogram is inventing precision it does not have.

How wild feeding compares
Some perspective on why overfeeding is the default failure in captivity.
Fieldwork on wild Horsfield’s tortoises found that a steppe tortoise may feed on no more than about ninety days out of three hundred and sixty five, and even then spends roughly fifteen minutes a day grazing. The species brumates through winter and aestivates through summer drought.
Mediterranean species have two feeding seasons rather than one continuous stretch, with a spring flush, a summer of near-total inactivity, and a second autumn flush.
Now compare that with a bowl refilled every morning in a British garden from March to October.
There is also direct evidence of the result. A 2024 study measuring 373 Hermann’s tortoises found that captive animals in Germany were significantly heavier and larger than free-ranging tortoises in France. Captive tortoises are not simply well fed. They are, on average, bigger than the wild baseline.

Temperature and activity
Digestion in tortoises is temperature-dependent. Fermentation only works within a suitable body temperature range, so feeding cannot be separated from heating.
- A cold tortoise cannot process what it eats. Food offered to an animal that has not warmed up does nothing useful and may sit in the gut.
- Feed in the morning, once the animal has basked, rather than late in the day.
- Appetite falls in cool weather and that is normal, not a problem to correct with richer food.
- Continuous night heating is counterproductive. It keeps digestion running around the clock, which accelerates growth. Research on juvenile leopard and Sulcata tortoises found that supplemental night heat increased both growth rate and shell pyramiding, with humidity and diet held constant.
- Activity drives requirement. A tortoise with a large planted enclosure that has to walk for its food needs feeding differently from one in a small table.
How to judge your feeding routine
Four methods, in ascending order of usefulness.
1. The twenty-minute rule
British Chelonia Group guidance for hatchlings is a single daily feed portioned so it is cleared in roughly twenty minutes. It is a practical starting point rather than a precise measure, and it works better for juveniles than adults.
2. Weigh and measure regularly
Keep a simple record: weight in grams and straight carapace length in centimetres, monthly for growing animals. Trends matter more than any single reading.
A wide pale band of new growth around the scutes means the animal is growing faster than it should.
3. The Jackson ratio, with real caveats
The Jackson ratio divides weight in grams by the cube of straight carapace length in centimetres. Around 0.21 is treated as optimal, with 0.18 to 0.22 considered an acceptable range for hibernation.
It is genuinely useful, and it is also widely misused. Before you rely on it:
- *It applies only to Testudo graeca and Testudo hermanni.* The Tortoise Protection Group is explicit that it cannot be used for other species, because body shapes differ.
- Measurement errors are the usual cause of alarming results. Use straight carapace length, measured flat, not the curve of the shell and not length plus width.
- Bladder content, gut content and eggs all move the number. A tortoise weighed with a full bladder reads differently from the same animal an hour later. Repeat an unexpected result a few days on.
- It is a hibernation fitness check, not a general health verdict.
A 2024 study comparing several assessment methods against a clinical body condition score found the Jackson ratio consistently produced the weakest correlations of the methods tested, and in one group of male tortoises no significant correlation at all.
4. Body condition scoring
The approach that research increasingly favours is a clinical body condition score, running from 1 for emaciated through 3 for ideal to 5 for obese, assessed by examining the animal rather than by arithmetic.
For a keeper, the practical version is looking at the tortoise properly and regularly: the limbs, the fit within the shell, the fat deposits around the shoulders and hind legs. Your vet can show you what to look for, and it is worth asking at a routine appointment.
Signs of overfeeding

That last row matters. Tortoises evolved to gorge whenever food appeared, so a tortoise begging at the bowl is behaving correctly rather than telling you it is hungry.
Obesity in tortoises is associated with fatty change in the liver, and in females with reproductive complications. None of it is visible from the outside until it is well advanced.
When to seek veterinary advice
- Not eating for several days, outside the run-up to hibernation
- Weight loss, or failure to gain in a growing animal
- Sudden appetite change with no change in temperature or season
- Lethargy or reluctance to bask
- Shell deformity, soft shell or unusual growth
- Straining, or persistent loose droppings
- A Jackson ratio well outside range in a T. graeca or T. hermanni, once you have ruled out measurement error
