FOOD GUIDE
Can Tortoises Eat Carrots?
Tortoises can eat carrots sparingly, not regularly. Why the calcium to phosphorus ratio falls short, what carrot tops add, and what to feed instead.
Evidence-led guidance · UK focus · Veterinary reviewed
Yes, occasionally and in small amounts. Our records rate carrot feed sparingly for every species group, which means a rare treat rather than a routine part of the diet.
For Hermann's tortoise
Carrot
Daucus carota sativus
Carrot and its tops are not staple foods; offer only rarely and in small amounts.
Preparation: Wash thoroughly and only use correctly identified, pesticide-free food.

| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Safe? | Yes, not toxic |
| How often? | Occasionally. Not a weekly fixture |
| How much? | A small piece, not a whole carrot |
| Raw or cooked? | Raw only |
| Carrot tops? | Also sparingly, for different reasons |
| Which species? | Same answer for all three groups |
Which species this applies to
Unusually for this site, the verdict does not change by species. Carrot is rated sparingly for Mediterranean Testudo species, for grazing tortoises like the Sulcata and leopard, and for tropical forest species alike.
So the answer is the same whether you keep a Hermann’s, a Horsfield’s, a spur-thighed or anything else. Root vegetables suit none of them particularly well.
Why carrots should not dominate the diet
Three reasons, and the first is the one most pages get wrong.
The calcium to phosphorus ratio falls short
Tortoises need dietary calcium to outweigh phosphorus, with UK veterinary guidance commonly setting a minimum of 2:1 and higher being better. Wild forage routinely exceeds that by a wide margin.
Carrots sit at roughly 1:1, sometimes slightly worse.
This is where published advice splits, and it is worth seeing why. Some pet-advice sites report the near-equal ratio and conclude carrots are therefore fine. Others report the same figure and conclude they are unsuitable. Both are quoting the same number. The difference is whether they compare it against the 2:1 minimum, and when you do, 1:1 clearly falls short.
Excess dietary phosphorus stimulates the parathyroid gland, which pulls calcium out of the skeleton to correct the blood imbalance. Sustained, that is the route to metabolic bone disease.
Oxalic acid
Carrots contain oxalic acid, which binds calcium into a form the animal cannot absorb. So the mineral problem compounds: a food already short on calcium relative to phosphorus also interferes with the calcium coming from elsewhere in the meal.
This matters most when several oxalate-containing foods appear in the same bowl. Carrot alongside spinach and parsley is a genuinely poor combination.
Sugar and digestible carbohydrate
Carrots are high in readily digestible carbohydrate. A tortoise gut is built to ferment coarse fibre slowly, and soft, sugary food speeds that process up, which pushes growth in the wrong direction and encourages weight gain.
What carrots do offer is beta-carotene, which converts to vitamin A. That is a real benefit, and it is why carrots are not on the avoid list. It is not enough to justify regular feeding when weeds deliver better nutrition without the drawbacks.
Carrot tops
Carrot leaves are not the loophole they are sometimes presented as.
They carry oxalic acid much as the root does, plus higher levels of protein and potassium, both of which need controlling in a tortoise diet. Our records treat the tops the same way as the root: not a staple, small amounts only.
They do supply some minerals the root does not, including iron, zinc and iodine, so they are not worthless. Rotate them in occasionally rather than treating them as a green.
How to serve carrot, if you are going to
- Raw, always. Cooking serves no purpose and degrades the nutrients.
- Small piece. For a Mediterranean tortoise, think fingernail-sized, not a slice.
- Wash it, as with everything.
- Do not grate or chop finely. Fine particles ferment faster, which is the opposite of what you want. This applies across the diet and the reasoning is in Mediterranean tortoise diet.
- Do not pair it with other oxalate-rich foods in the same feed.
- Do not use it as a bribe. Tortoises learn quickly to hold out for sweet food and refuse better options.
Better staple alternatives
If you are feeding carrot because it is what you have in the fridge, these do the same job better.
| Instead of carrot | Why it is better | Rating |
|---|---|---|
| Plantain (Plantago spp.) | High fibre, good mineral profile, grows everywhere in Britain | Regular |
| Sow thistle | Same, and abundant from spring to autumn | Regular |
| Mallow | Leaves and flowers both usable | Regular |
| Hibiscus, viola, calendula | Flowers rated for regular feeding, and readily taken | Regular |
| Corn salad (lamb’s lettuce) | The one supermarket green rated for regular use | Regular |
| Kale or spring greens | Better calcium profile, though still rotation foods | Moderation |
The wider point: not one of the 22 vegetables in our records earns a regular rating for a Mediterranean tortoise, while weeds and flowers supply eleven of the fourteen foods that do. See best weeds for tortoises and what vegetables can tortoises eat.
Common questions
Can Hermann’s tortoises eat carrots? Yes, sparingly. Same as every other species.
Can Horsfield’s tortoises eat carrots? Yes, sparingly, and this species is particularly prone to overfeeding problems generally, so keep it genuinely occasional.
Are baby carrots better? Marginally better on the mineral ratio, but still not good enough to change the verdict.
Can tortoises eat cooked carrot? Feed it raw. There is no benefit to cooking and it degrades the nutritional content.
Can tortoises eat carrot tops? Yes, sparingly, as above.
My tortoise loves carrot. Is that a sign it needs it? No. Preference tracks sugar content, not nutritional need. A tortoise will also eat dog food enthusiastically.
How often is too often? If carrot appears every week, that is a habit rather than an occasional treat. Once in a while, in a varied diet built on weeds, is the level our rating describes.
My tortoise ate a whole carrot. Should I worry? No. It is not toxic. Return to a proper diet and do not repeat it.
To check anything else, the tortoise food checker gives a verdict for your species group with the reasoning and sources behind it. The complete banded list is in the tortoise food chart, and the do not feed list is at tortoise foods to avoid.
Ratings follow our own food records, built from the Tortoise Trust, the British Chelonia Group, The Tortoise Table plant database and published veterinary sources, and checked as described in our sources and review policy.
